Here is an interesting website - prosper.com. Person to person lending/borrowing marketplace. If it becomes popular enough, TPTB might be pushed out of their core business? I know, I am dreaming. :D

Among the permaculture folks there are folks using person to person lending or community owned "banks". It can be a very effective way of building up assets in a small community, rather than having your local wealth exported via interest payments to a financial center. Who would you rather pay your interest payments to, your neighbor, or some CEO of a transnational? Your neighbor is likely to spend that money back into the local economy.

The commercials have a big advantage, in that they can lend out at multiples of their deposits via fractional reserve lending.
